How do you rebuild from Ground Zero?

I’m talking about rebuilding when you have nothing at all to build with.

How do you rebuild when a tornado comes into your life and rips your life from its foundation leaving you naked and bare in your soul, your heart, your mind, and your spirit.  You feel completely empty and depleted.  What do you do when you have nothing left?

How do you possibly rebuild from ground zero?

I know what it feels like to have to start over. I know what it feels like to have your foundation ripped from under you. 16 years ago I was living the American dream and all of a sudden my American dream became a living nightmare.

My husband had a massive stroke and passed away. I was left with the devastation of my foundation being ripped from its core. When he died. I was literally at Ground Zero in my heart, my mind, my soul, and my spirit. I was void and empty. His death left me financially, spiritually, emotionally, and physically bankrupt. Not only was I devastated, but my four small children were devastated as well. They lost their dad. They lost their hero and life support system. Talk about being at ground zero. Wow!!!

I had to figure out how to rebuild from Ground Zero.  I had to figure out how to start over again.  I had to figure out a plan for my four children and for me.

Rebuilding from Ground Zero required much strength, prayer, faith, hope, and perseverance.

Today, I’m going to give you the 3 Rs of rebuilding from ground zero.

My decision when rebuilding from Ground Zero was first to refocus. My focus for the past year was to care for my husband and children. Now, I had to change my focus and as a result change careers. I changed careers because my current career would not allow me to be available to my children like I wanted to be, so I went back to school. I already had a B.S. Degree in Business. So, I went back to get a degree in education. Was it easy? No, I had to take it one day at a time, but in rebuilding from Ground Zero and refocusing, I was able to earn a second bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree and a specialist degree in curriculum and instruction.

You have to take your life one day at a time when you’re rebuilding from Ground Zero.  You have to have a plan when you’re rebuilding from Ground Zero.  Refocusing will allow you time to develop that plan. How are you going to get where you want to be? What are the steps necessary to refocus?

My community support system helped me recharge. They were always there for me emotionally to shore me up and hold me down. It gave me the strength I needed. You definitely have to have a support system when you’re rebuilding from ground zero and believe it or not your support system is not necessarily going to be just your family. Your support system can be your family, your friends, your coworkers, a meetup group that you’ve joined or it could be a group of divorced or widowed parents on Facebook.

This is you’re going to be your community the community of people that help you rebuild from Ground Zero. In addition to your community support invest in hobbies or activities that give you peace and joy. Things that will make you feel whole again. For me, nature is my go to place for peace and joy. I love being outside in the sun. I love hiking, walking, swimming, being at the beach or by the pool. It fuels my mind, body, and spirit.

But the most important thing I can tell you about rebuilding from Ground Zero is when you get to Ground Zero just remember there’s no other way to go but up.  I had to have faith that one day at a time, one goal at a time, I could rebuild from Ground Zero. Rebuild your life with people and goals that support, nurture, and fuel your dreams and your visions.  Rebuild with a feasible action plan that will help you accomplish your goals. In the past 16 years of rebuilding from ground zero, I’ve been able to accomplish more than I ever dreamed possible and more important than that I was able to raise loving, kind, caring, honest, trustworthy, beautiful children who positively impact society.  More important than all the degrees earned, and thousands of people I’ve poured into, my greatest accomplishment to this day is the time and the love I spent pouring into my children because they will be the legacy that I leave to the world.

Today I want to encourage you to not give up, not give in, not give out.  You too can rebuild from Ground Zero. Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Let that life be worth living.
